A BIM revolution comes to WME
Under the direction of our BIM Manager, Kapil Kumar, WME is investing in the latest software and technology, which is not only enabling a speedier and more accurate BIM service but also opening up the design and review process to clients in ways that help them ‘see’ their project and the modifications made in real time.
Our engineers are using a Digital Design Review process with custom mark-up and approval tools. Team members can review 2D and 3D models, provide fast feedback and track the changes, and still cut days off a review cycle. Major projects are assigned a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) from day one, to ensure that all stakeholders share data and that good communication lines are established.
But it’s the visual side of this revolution that is most intriguing. We are using our own BIM 360 Team hub (a cloud application) for the data sharing and review, and the cloud hub allows us to access the models through the Web. We can show clients and stakeholders their building models in meetings and relay changes back to WME for real time amendments. We create video walk-throughs for visualisation of buildings and their design-phase structure and services.
And we can use virtual reality technologies to speed up the review process. The photos show Associate Director and electrical engineer Ken Heney, doing a ‘live’ virtual reality walk-through looking for clashes in the model.
It’s a brave new BIM world.
